Classic covers (part 1)

I think I’ve spotted a gap in the market. I’ve seen loads of blogs about classic album sleeves but no mention of single picture covers. This pic for the ‘Tears Are Not Enough’ single would have made a great cover for the Lexicon of Love album.

mp3: Tears Are Not Enough – Tears Are Not Enough (Single Version) (1981)

My favourite band logo too!

You have 'Favourite band logos'? Sheesh.

What about (and I'm blowing the exclusivity on this for myself here, but what they hey) 'favourite single run out groove message'?

'I only have record shops left' - Joy Division, 'LWTUA' (natch).

Of course favourite band logos. I bet on your old jotters where you copied your Jam lyrics you wrote ‘The Jam’ on the cover with a tail on the m like this. Simon, I guess you're refering to the three stars; brilliant in its simplicity.

I've considered the runout groove message post in the past - must do it one day. As I remember it all the Joy Division record were 'Porky Prime Cuts' and one of them read 'here are the young men' (from Decades).

And the memories, they come flooding back.

KISS logo for me, circa '76.

My favourite is the classic Roger Dean Yes logo but you’re not allowed to say that in polite society.

Quite rightly.

You boys! You all left in the sixth forms before and we took over the stereo and we swept your Kiss and your Genesis and your Yes aside and we wrote in their place, yes proudly! The Jam (with a curly M! BLAST you Michael, you know me too well).

Porky Prime Cuts! Delicious.

...nor can I. That Yes logo is a classic fo' sho'.

And might I add that I was scribbling that AND The Jam logo on my notebook?

...and the 1977/78 lower 6th at my school loved Be Bop Deluxe thanks in no small part to my influence and I wasn’t even there – I left after the 5th year and went to college instead.

Ahem. I was in the 2nd year in 1977/8. Lower 6th 1981-2. The girls played Duran Duran, but everyone liked 'Dare'.

81-82 was my second year in secondary school....

What you youngsters fail to realise is that with age comes wisdom (and an appreciation of progressive rock).

A fondness for prog rock may be symptomatic but not of a condition normally associated with age or wisdom. And I’m older than the lot of you, so I can say it.

ABC is good disco rehash if that can be called good. Their early cover art showed their fondness for drama and elegance. Then they got popular. As for the band logo, I don’t get it. Three stars out of five is just average.

The Jam with the tail on the m as it was so easy to do....

I cant draw to save myself, so that was another reason to hate prog rock covers.

The other one I loved putting on my school jotters was Buzzcocks with the two big zz in the middle (it also seemed a really rude word to write)
