Mind Made

It’s been a while since I featured a more guitar based new wave record. This one’s from 1980 and has an XTC-ish quality without quite having their verve and panache. That’s not to say it’s a bad record. This single may require a couple of listens but trust me it’s a grower. My advice is to play it loud.

Google doesn’t throw much light on Thieves Like Us except the drummer on this record is John Parish who went on to play on several P J Harvey records.

Thieves Like Us - Mind Made (1980)

Interesting, and strange choice as a single.I do remember them from that time.
I see there is a French band around now with the same name, which makes it a PITA when you go on YouTube to check out other songs.
Same thing happens when you enter Nirvana and keep getting some band from Seattle...Tsk!

It's not really catchy and instant enough for a single but I don't that's what they were aiming for.

The Swedish/American Thieves Like Us seem pretty good from the little I've heard. This is very New Order.

PS I know you like cats but don't search for pussy on google. You wouldn't believe what come up.

The 1980 band reminds me of some of the early new wave bands that started out as pub rock bands. I wish you'd post the b sides in addition to the a sides on these obscure singles to give us more to chew on.

About the modern band sounding like New Order, I suppose we all know "Thieves Like Us" was a song by New Order....

Did you find what you were searching for on google? I would never insult my cat by calling her a pussy.

If I find time I'll rip the b-side. It's more typical new wave with a faster tempo and staccato singing if memory serves.

You have plenty of time. The promised and much promoted end of the world didn't happen.

Speaking of liking cats or just being catty, what ever happened to your little dog Sparky?

Mick said...

He's a big dog now. I'm just off to the park with him and the kids, then I have to feed them and bath them hence little time for ripping and blogging. Mrs M can't do any of these things because she's an lady of leisure.

Ooo! I fear I may have caught you on a bad day. Don't you have people to do those routine things for you? I'm sure Mrs. Mick provides you with something other than mere decoration. Although my Mrs. didn't and then she completely cracked up and so here her cat and I are. Minds gone. Life is so sad....

I had to let most of the staff go recently so I'm afraid I have to do all these mundane things myself. I've taken out a superinjunction to stop them going to the press with lurid (and accurate) details of our private life.

soz to hear about the Mrs. Glad you got custody of the cat.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, I've got my scanner working again. That is an actual scan of my actual (slightly tatty) record sleeve.

darkdance said...

Those super 'injs are worthless although you are probably safe for now as long as Davy's Pippa and her royal Sista in their bikinis remain in telephoto range. I'll continue watching the tabs.

You never answered my question about your google search for pussy. Meanwhile, I'm sure Bro Ray is quietly following all this banter, and you know how he gossips.

Your scan is rather up close and personal. It's too fine for eBay. The chaps look old enough to have been pub crawlers. And there now, I've cleverly brought us back to chatting about the band and the music again. The next round is on Paul.

Tried the Pussy Google...

And that's 3 hours of my life I'll Never get back.

'Gossip Calypso,Gossip Calypso,
read all about it,

I'm sure you will get more meaningful results if you search just within dorset and/or hamps. But you can forget about finding virgins in the scenic countryside there locally.

Anyways, back to the song (because I have no idea what this talk of certain google searches is about).

Not really my c of t, am I alone on thinking that if you added a bit of that organ they use then you end up with a stranglers b side?

Paul

Mick said...

Not sure about that, Paul but give it a few more listens. It really is a grower. Mrs M didn't know this song til a week ago and I caught her singing along with it a few days ago.

BrotheRay said...

Virgins! Pah..I'm over that.

But to get back to the music, that 45 of yours,Mick. It's worth £8 currently. The question is,did they record anything else?

And does anybody remember a group called Pussy in the early seventies. An all girl American group if memory serves.Included Suzi Quatro's sister.Or did I dream that.

Mick said...

A few singles but no albums as far as I know. This song really does get to you after a few plays though.

darkdance said...

Bro Ray, there was just one earlier single according to discogs and your dreams are just that. No mas Quatros. Perhaps you are recalling the disco group Poussez? Or perhaps you eat too moch spicey food to make up for the haggardness of the women left thereabouts.

Mick said...

OMG as the youngsters say. I think Raymond is talking about these young ladies.

BrotheRay said...

Yes Indeed Mick, getting something mixed up there, can't imagine what.Fanny were not girls you wanted to be stuck in a lift with...at least not then...I'd give my Gordon Lightfoot collection for it now.

Footnote:There was a group called Pussy. They were on the very collectable Morgan Label in 1969.Contained members of Angel Pavement and Fortes Mentum, which won't mean much to you but is very interesting to us 60's popsike collectors.

Mick said...

You made those names up, didn't you.

BrotheRay said...

Mick: No straight up.Trust me i'm a record collector.

darkdance: Poussez? - Didn't we deal with french tarts on a recent post?

darkdance said...

So Ray had Pussy and Fanny mixed up. I can't stop laughing.

Poussez wasn't French. They were American and very sexed up even for disco. I'm sure both of you bros would like them.

BrotheRay said...

Easy mistake to make I reckon..Remember I am doing it all from memory.

darkdance said...

Well, Ray, at least you have a memory. Que Scarlet Fantastic "No Memories" for me while I sip the Islay that mucky pup Davy just bought me over at his place.

It's a couple days later, I think, and I'm surprised to find that this post hasn't disappeared in its entirety and/or that godoogle hasn't slapped a parental advisory on the blog. The music is sometimes a bit mixed but Mick gives rather good parties, don't you think?

Mick said...

The music is sometimes a bit mixed? Fashion, Eddie & Sunshine, Norma Jean, Thieves Like Us and The Enid in one month is what I call a good mix.
